Creature SPFX
You Are
Artistic and prolific: your keen eye for lighting, color, form, and composition inform your work from ideation to creation; youʼre a master of the rapid sketch, quickly generating ideas knowing that sometimes it takes a hundred good ones to get the great one.
An experienced collaborator: your artistic hand reflects years of experience refining your craft, but youʼre also a natural and avid collaborator; you coat-check your ego, but are eminently capable of articulating and defending your next great idea.
Multi-dimensional: youʼre as experienced and knowledgeable with pencil as you are with clay; you're also comfortable experimenting with Zbrush and other 3D programs.
As a technician: you comprehend the necessary workflow to convert a sculpture into a fully operational special effects makeup, prepared for use on talent.
Anatomically correct: you have advanced understanding of human and animal anatomy, but arenʼt afraid to stretch the limits; exaggerated, stylized proportions feel perfectly balanced in your hands.
A passionate cinephile: your dedication to meticulously studying and analyzing frames of your favorite films, has granted you a deep understanding of the audience. Drawing from your own filmic anecdotes you have built a vast collection of mise en scène. All of which helps to better contextualize your creature designs.
A scholar of the grotesque: Some of your favorite special fx artists are Stan Winston, Rick Baker, Rob Bottin, Ray Gene Warren Jr., Greg Cannom, Dick Smith and Ray Harryhausen. Your appreciation for art isn't limited to special fx make-up for film & TV because you draw inspiration from classical sculpture and contemporary fine art too. Your favorite films are The Thing, Alien, Bram Stoker's Dracula, Werewolf in London and Pan’s Labyrinth because you understand the through line of modern creatures and mythological archetypes.
